Things fall apart: town starts year with bad news

They say bad things happen in threes, but Deep River has had one more added in for good measure.

The town’s chief administrative officer, Sean Patterson, had some bad news on the infrastructure front last week for town council’s first meeting of 2025.

First off, Patterson told council the elevator at the public library has been shut down and its entire control system needs to be replaced, at a cost of roughly $150,000.

The elevator is 30 years old, Patterson said, adding that’s about its expected lifespan, according to the company brought in to assess the lift.

Secondly, the smaller of the town’s two front-end loaders, which are crucial to snow clearing operations, recently blew its transmission.

The loader was slated to be replaced in 2026 and Patterson told council it would be “a significant investment” to fix the piece of equipment in order for it to be operable again this winter.

“It looks like we’d be spending good money after bad,” he said.

Thirdly, Patterson had the misfortune to report, the town had to deal with back to back watermain breaks earlier this month…
