Riding to elect new MPP

By the time you read this, it may be official.

Premier Doug Ford confirmed late last week that he will dissolve the legislature and send Ontario to the polls in a general election February 27.

Ford said he needs “the largest mandate in Ontario history” to deal with the threat of tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

But Ford critics say he’s in it for nothing more than political gain.

One thing that is clear is that the riding will have a new Member of Provincial Parliament once the election is over.

Long-time MPP John Yakabuski announced late last year that, after much consideration and “conversations with those nearest and dearest to me,” he had decided that he would step down and not be a candidate in the next provincial vote.

Yakabuski has held the riding since 2003 for the Progressive Conservatives, winning the election in June 2022 – his sixth – with more than 60 per cent of the vote.

“I never expected to be a six-term MPP when I ran in 2003,” he confessed after those results came in.

“I’m confident I’ve done my job, that I’ve done the things which have earned me the people’s support”…
