Town turns down pool support

The town of Laurentian Hills will not be giving Deep River more than $300,000 towards the cost of repairs to the Deep River Community Pool.

But Mayor Anne Giardini says Laurentian Hills would be willing to look at a shared recreation agreement to see how the two towns can work together in future.

“As does Deep River and every other municipality in Renfrew County, we have limited money to spend,” Giardini said.

“I thank you for coming here, and I understand your request, but I don’t believe at this time that we will agree to be putting money towards another municipality’s capital investment.”

Giardini was responding after Deep River Mayor Sue D’Eon and Reeve Glenn Doncaster appeared before Laurentian Hills council last week to support the town’s request for a contribution to repairs at the pool.

Deep River council agreed last August to award contracts worth $804,395 for repairs to the pool roof and replacement of the sound baffles inside.

In a letter to Mayor Giardini and council last fall, D’Eon asked Laurentian Hills to provide a “proportional contribution” to the pool project, “based on population and (the) number of households in the North Renfrew community.”

Using those numbers, D’Eon requested that Laurentian Hills pay 39.7 per cent of the project cost, or $319,345…
