Town to consider “microtransit” system?


On-demand microtransit could be a boon for small rural municipalities like Deep River.

That was the message delivered to town council last week from VIA Partnerships, a company which is pioneering the unique transportation service in countries around the world.

Microtransit, VIA’s Emerson Dieudonne told council, is technology-enabled transportation which sees “routing algorithms using real-time, on-the-ground partnerships to group prospective passengers into shared rides.”

Conventional modes of public transit, Dieudonne said, are either inflexible or out of the reach of smaller municipalities.

“You’re getting the best of both worlds,” he said of microtransit, which uses fleets of smaller vehicles such as minivans…
