To “scoot” or not to scoot – is that the question?

The town of Deep River is inviting feedback on the use of e-scooters in the municipality.

Although widely popular, the use of e-scooters is actually prohibited under provincial law on public roads, sidewalks, trails, paths and walkways.

Like ATVs and other off-road vehicles, however, Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act allows the use of “electric kick-scooters” where a municipality passes a bylaw permitting them.

Deep River has now posted a public survey on its website (deepriver.ca) asking for comments on the idea.

The town is considering passing a bylaw to allow the use of e-scooters as a “pilot project” until November 27, 2029.

In a report to council back in May, town staff noted that the use of e-scooters in Deep River is “becoming more prevalent as a form of micro-mobility (small, low speed vehicles designed for personal use and short trips, such as bicycles, e-bikes, scooters, etc).”

“While e-scooters are part of the move towards more sustainable transportation, their use does carry higher risks of injuries compared to bicycles and e-bicycles,” staff added…
