Speed cameras coming to county roads

You may soon get ticketed for speeding on Renfrew County roads, even if you’re never stopped and there’s no police cruiser in sight.

Renfrew County council has approved a recommendation from its operations committee to begin setting up “automated speed enforcement” (ASE) on select county roads.

ASE is allowed under Ontario regulation 398/19 of the Highway Traffic Act.

Under the regulation, an ASE system consists of a “combination of a camera and speed-measuring equipment that can be used to take a photograph of a motor vehicle and determine and record the rate of speed at which the motor vehicle is travelling at the time the photograph is taken.”

“An automated speed enforcement system may be permanently or temporarily located on or adjacent to any highway.”

A photo taken by the ASE system must clearly show the licence plate of the vehicle caught on camera, and the speeding ticket is sent to the licence holder, whether they were driving or not…
