County to adopt tourism tax?

A touchy tourism topic untouched since the pandemic is back on the table.

A delegation from the Ottawa Valley Tourist Association (OVTA) revisited its push last week for the implementation of a county-wide municipal accommodation tax (MAT).

The OVTA is the official destination marketing organization for Renfrew County.

In operation since 1956, the OVTA is governed by a volunteer board of directors, representative of businesses from across all sectors of the local tourism industry.

The accommodation tax was introduced by the province back in 2017, with legislation granting municipalities the authority to implement a tax on “transient accommodations” lasting 30 days or less.

Municipalities are, in turn, required to share a minimum of 50 percent of the MAT collected with an eligible tourism entity…
