Voters in Renfrew County will cast their ballots in a “new” riding during the next federal election, but there will be no change in the riding boundaries.
The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario has ruled that the riding of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke will be renamed “Algonquin-Renfrew-Pembroke” to recognize “the importance of the Algonquin people’s history and presence in this region.”
However, the commission has walked back its previous recommendation to change the boundaries of the riding.
The change would have cut the township of Greater Madawaska (Calabogie and area) out of the new riding and attached it to Lanark-Frontenac.
In its final report, the commission says it was “very impressed with, and grateful for, the extensive public participation in this important democratic process”…
