Mayor sets 2026 budget target

Deep River Mayor Sue D’Eon is flexing some of her new “strong” powers in directing the town’s 2026 municipal budget.

The province extended “strong mayor” powers to 169 municipalities last spring.

One of those powers is to “propose” the municipal budget.

D’Eon announced late Sunday afternoon that she has directed town staff to prepare the town’s 2026 budget with an overall increase in the tax levy of 3.11 per cent.

D’Eon said that represents the average rate of inflation over the past seven years.

She said she has also directed staff to prepare a “scenario” for council’s consideration of “what could be accomplished” if the tax levy increase was 4.5 per cent.

“Despite the financial pressures of being a full-service urban municipality, over the previous three years (current term of this council) Deep River’s tax levy increase has generally been lower than the average of our municipal peers identified in (the town’s) Financial Master Plan,” D’Eon said in a statement on her mayor’s Facebook page…
