Mayor Sue D’Eon will be representing the town of Deep River at the international level next week.
As both mayor and vice chair of the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities (CANHC), D’Eon has been invited to attend the first ever International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) International Conference on Stakeholder Engagement.
The conference will take place in Vienna, Austria next Monday to Friday, May 26-30.
In a memo on this week’s council agenda, D’Eon notes that she and town CAO Sean Patterson have been invited by AECL and approved by Global Affairs Canada to attend the event.
“With kind support from AECL for travel related costs, there will be little to no cost associated to Deep River taxpayers and hopefully significant new relationships and benefits for our community,” she says.
As well as attending the conference, D’Eon has been asked to attend and speak at the “Nuclear Communities and Mayors in Focus” event on Tuesday, May 27 hosted by IAEA director general Rafael Mariano Grossi.
“This event is expected to serve as a platform for both dialogue and the exchange of ideas related to the benefits and challenges of our unique roles and experiences hosting nuclear facilities in our respective countries.”
Mayors, Indigenous leaders and senior staff of several other Canadian nuclear host communities will also attend and speak, including Kincardine, Clarington, Ignace and Wabigoon Lake First Nation…
