Local election races begin

There will be elections in two of three North Renfrew municipalities this fall after all.

According to the lists of certified candidates posted Monday, seven people have submitted their names to run for five elected council positions in Deep River.

And in Head Clara Maria, Councillor Karen Leclerc filed her nomination to challenge Councillor Rachel Richer for the position of mayor.

In Deep River, Mayor Sue D’Eon and Reeve Glenn Doncaster have both been acclaimed to another four-year term.

Running for council will be incumbents Will Fitton, Tom Vaughan and Christina Giardini, plus new candidates Jay Crawford, Benjamin Myers, John Turner and Christopher Beimers.

Not running again will be current Councillors Kathy Hughes and Terry Myers.

Hughes was first elected in 2018 and announced earlier this summer that she would not run again to focus on other priorities over the next few years.

Myers was first elected in 2010 and said that while he was leaning towards not running for some time, it came down to a last-minute decision.
