Laurentian Hills paid tribute to some of its long-serving firefighters last week.

In a special ceremony at the beginning of the regular January council meeting, the town presented service awards to Joshua Labre for 20 years with the Laurentian Hills fire department, Owen Stewart for 25 years, and John Barrington and Kevin Waito both for 40 years.

Juanita Stewart was also presented a 25-year “companion” pin, and Barrington and Waito received provincial service bars for 30, 35 and 40 years of service.

Mayor Anne Giardini said the town is “very proud” of all members of its fire department and “the service you provide and have provided to our community.”

“You and your fellow firefighters are a unique group of individuals that show up at all hours of the night, (in the) daytime, all the time and (in) all kinds of conditions to serve the residents of Laurentian Hills,” she said.

“We recognize the hard work of preparation and the training that goes into what you guys do every day.”

The mayor also paid tribute to the partners and families of the firefighters for the role they play.

“Thank you for supporting your loved ones who at a moment’s notice, disrupt your sleep or change your family plans to respond to what could be a dangerous situation in our community.

“We recognize and appreciate your support. So on behalf of council, staff and our entire community, hank you for your commitment to public safety”…
