Deep River council has approved plans for a controversial apartment building off Avon Road.
The town bought the property in 2006 from the former Lutheran Church for the nominal cost of $1, and sold it to Neil Milton, president of Bygda Builders, in 2023 after having declared it “surplus” the previous year.
Milton applied to the town last year for a zoning bylaw amendment to allow for construction of a three-storey, nine-unit “row-stacked dwelling” with underground parking.
But his plans drew heated opposition at a public meeting in November from nearby residents, who raised concerns about its impact on everything from their privacy to parking in the neighbourhood.
Now Milton has come back to the table with a revised application which scales down the original proposal from nine residential units to six.
A report on this week’s town council agenda said the new proposal addresses the concerns raised at the public meeting last fall, noting it removes the need for interior side yard setbacks.
The report also suggested that the reduction in the number of units, coupled with an increased number of parking spaces, now meets the zoning requirements for multi-residential units.
In a 4-2 recorded vote Wednesday night, council approved a zoning bylaw amendment to allow the project to go ahead without the need for further public consultation…
