CNSC delays decision on NSDF

There will be no decision on the future of the Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) at Chalk River until at least early next year.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission issued a “procedural direction” last week allowing another seven months for consultations to take place with two Indigenous communities.

The commission said in its announcement that it is “leaving the record open to allow more time for engagement and consultation with Kebaowek First Nation and the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, and for the filing of additional information about these consultative efforts.”

“The commission will allow Kebaowek First Nation, the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, AECL, CNL and CNSC staff to file additional information, with a deadline of January 31, 2023.”

The commission said the delay “constitutes no ruling with respect to the environmental assessment or the licence amendment application”…
