One of Renfrew County’s biggest employers is seeking partnerships with the County of Renfrew itself.
That was the message delivered to the 17 mayors and reeves of county council last week by officials from the Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB).
RCDSB chairman Leo Boland told county council there are currently 9,141 students in the school board’s 21 elementary and seven secondary schools.
Keeping rein over those students is a staff of 2,367 people, which includes 1,611 permanent employees.
“We’re the third largest employer in Renfrew County,” Boland said, noting those numbers rank the school board just behind Garrison Petawawa and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories in the size of its workforce.
The RCDSB functions with an operating budget of $165 million, coupled with a capital budget of $9.5 million, along with $2 million in funding for responsive education programs.
But Kristen Niemi, the school board’s director of education, pointed out that money often isn’t enough to keep pace with financial pressures.
