It’s official.
Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd will receive yet-again record levels of funding this year for the operation of the Chalk River Laboratories and other sites.
According to the federal government’s main spending estimates released last week, AECL will receive $1.945 billion in 2025-26, up from $1.6 billion last year.
The funding is broken down in the spending estimates to $1.27 billion for “nuclear decommissioning and radioactive waste management” and $675.55 million for “nuclear laboratories.”
The funding for nuclear laboratories includes $322.3 million in operating funding and $353.2 million for capital.
“The mandate of Atomic Energy Canada Limited (AECL) is to enable nuclear science and technology and manage the government of Canada’s radioactive waste and decommissioning responsibilities,” the estimates document says.
This is the tenth year in a row that funding for AECL, CNL and Chalk River has remained at unprecedented levels.
Funding for AECL covers all of the Crown corporation’s operations across Canada, although the Chalk River labs are by far the company’s largest expense, through its contract with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories…
