Canadian Nuclear Laboratories will have more work to do before it can move forward with the decommissioning of the former Nuclear Power Demonstration site near Rolphton.
A lot more work.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission recently advised CNL that the Federal Provincial Indigenous Review Team (FPRIT) has completed its review of CNL’s draft environmental impact statement (EIS) on the NPD project and the company’s response to 280 “information requests.”
Of those 280 requests, the CNSC notes, the review team has accepted 179 and rejected 101.
The team also came up with 167 new requests, “as well as additional feedback and concerns for CNL’s consideration.”
“CNSC staff expect CNL to submit complete responses to all outstanding IRs (information requests), as well as responses to the new IRs and to re-submit a revised EIS package,” the CNSC said in its letter.
CNL originally submitted the first draft of its environmental impact statement for the NPD project in the fall of 2017.
Overall, the “NPD Closure Project” would see the NPD reactor fully decommissioned and much of the property returned to public use.
The proposal is to “grout” the remaining reactor components in place with concrete below ground level.
The entombed reactor would then be capped and covered over with a protective mound and monitored for the next 100-plus years…
