AECL in line for record funding?

Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd could be in for another record year of funding if the federal government’s interim spending measures are anything to go by.

With Parliament prorogued and an election campaign underway, Governor General Mary Simon has approved an order in council for $40.3 billion in federal spending to cover the period April 1 to May 15, 2025.

Included in the spending table posted in the Canada Gazette is $243.2 million for AECL.

At that level, AECL’s full funding for 2025-26 would be more than $1.9 billion.

That would be up from $1.59 billion approved for the 2024-25 fiscal year, but in line with projections included in AECL’s latest five-year corporate plan.

Projections of “unapproved funding” in the company’s plan show totals of $1.859 billion this year, falling slowly to $1.581 billion in 2026-27, $1.426 billion in 2027-28, and $1.369 billion in 2028-29.

The plan shows this year’s funding made up of more than $1.23 billion for “environmental stewardship” (decommissioning and waste management), $284 million in funding for “operating” nuclear labs, and $345 million in “capital” spending at Chalk River and other locations…
