Mother Nature cancelled the 40th annual Deep River Triathlon.
The more than 130 participants who had registered for the race were greeted with a rude awakening Sunday morning when the town announced at 6 am, it was forced to cancel the event due to health concerns associated with smoke from forest fires burning in Western Canada.
The triathlon had been scheduled to start from the marina at 8:30 am.
The town notified triathlon participants of its cancellation through emails and a post on the municipality’s webpage.
“Due to the current air quality advisory issued by Environment Canada, and the high-risk air quality health index forecasted for today, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the triathlon,” the Sunday morning post on the town’s webpage stated.
“The health and safety of our athletes, volunteers, staff and spectators is our top priority. With the predicted air quality posing health risks, especially during strenuous outdoor activity, this is the most responsible course of action.”
“We know how much time and effort many of you have put into preparing for this event, and we share your disappointment,” the statement continued.
“We truly appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult decision. We will be sharing more information soon regarding next steps, including registration options and rescheduling”…
