Townships name new deputy mayor, raise council pay $100 a month

The townships of Head, Clara, Maria have a new deputy mayor.

The new townships council held their first regular meeting last week and agreed to appoint new councillor Rachel Richer as deputy mayor.

Richer topped the polls in the municipal elections with 165 votes, placing first in the race of six candidates for four positions as councillor.

Also successful were Chris Dowser at 159 votes, Karen LeClerc with 148 and Fran Kelly-Chamberlain with 145.

Mayor Debbi Grills defeated former mayor Bob Reid in the race for council’s top job, earning 147 of the ballots cast to 70 for Reid.

Last Thursday, council approved a bylaw appointing Richer as deputy mayor as the councillor receiving the highest votes.

The resolution notes that the Municipal Act allows municipalities to appoint a deputy mayor to “act in the place of the head of council” on bodies like county councils or police boards.
