Town wants better Blue Box fix

The town of Laurentian Hills has added its voice to the number of municipalities expressing frustration with Ontario’s new Blue Box system.

Laurentian Hills council endorsed a resolution last week from the Regional Municipality of York calling on the province to “intervene” to ensure that Circular Materials – the new “producer responsibility” organization in charge of Blue Box collection – provides “fair, consistent, and equitable recycling collection service levels across all municipalities in Ontario.”

The province began the move to the new system – called “extended producer responsibility” (EPR) – as early as 2023.

Deep River and Laurentian Hills made the switch last year.

Under the EPR system, municipalities are no longer in charge of Blue Box collection.

Instead, Circular Materials handles residential recycling on behalf of companies that create recyclable products and packaging by contracting collection companies like Miller Waste (and locally, subcontractor P&G Enterprises).

However, the move has been far from seamless…
