A municipal park in Deep River is being renamed to reflect the legacy of a man who owned the west-end property where it’s situated.
During a special council meeting held last week, town council approved changing the name of Grouse Park to “Pat McAnulty Park.”
The popular park, home to ball diamonds and soccer pitches, was established back in 1978, after the town “acquired the land” from Mr. and Mrs. Pat McAnulty three years previously for the purpose of establishing a recreational area, according to a staff report on last week’s council agenda.
The McAnulty family has asked the town for the name-change to reflect both Pat McAnulty’s legacy, and the family’s long-standing association with the land the park is built on, and their contributions to the community.
The McAnulty family is also willing to help pay for future upkeep of the park, and has offered to create a fund to provide for the long-term maintenance and improvement of its recreational facilities.
Sean Patterson, the town’s chief administrative officer, stated in his report to council that Pat McAnulty was a “significant contributor” to Deep River in the early years of the town and throughout his life.
“He was instrumental in the construction of both the Mount Martin Ski Hill and the Deep River Airport,” Patterson stated…
