Deep River council will be seeking public input as to whether a pay hike is warranted for council members.
Council decided last week to hold a public meeting on the issue of council remuneration.
As previously reported, a bylaw was on the table in December proposing that remuneration for council members be increased anywhere from 30 to 70 per cent.
It was made clear at last week’s meeting, however, the bylaw would not come into force, if at all, until a public meeting is held to garner input from the electorate.
Councillor Tom Vaughan suggested council might be better off with gradual increases which would bring the council pay in line with comparator municipalities in time for the 2026 election.
“I feel that action should be taken to address this gap, to align it with other municipalities,” Vaughan said.
“I’m not sure a one-time increase is the best approach.”
Reeve Glenn Doncaster was of a different opinion.
“Councils have always shied away from this,” Doncaster said of the remuneration issue.
