Deep River is going electric.

Town staff are recommending that council give pre-budget approval to spending $13,240 to buy a suite of electric “landscaping tools.”

The tools would include four electric lawn mowers, two electric grass trimmers, two electric leaf blowers, one electric hedge trimmer, 20 battery packs with chargers, three rapid chargers, a 15-amp “power manager,” and one “compact wall plate.”

The package deal would save the town roughly $7,000 over the cost of buying the items separately, but the offer runs out at the end of February.

“As part of the town’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint, staff have identified an opportunity to transition from gas-powered landscaping equipment to electric alternatives,” the report says.

“This initiative involves replacing the town’s current gas-powered tools with new electric models.”

Staff say the switch will result in “both environmental and operating benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, quieter environment, and improved usability.”

“Furthermore, this will position Deep River as a leader in Renfrew County in reducing outdoor gas-powered equipment, setting an example for environmental responsibility”…
