Deep River Councillor Tom Vaughan will be receiving an early Christmas present this week, thanks to a staff report on where planned public works projects are happening in town.

As reported in last week’s NRT, Vaughan had suggested to his council colleagues that public education as to where water and sewer infrastructure upgrades are planned or taking place may go a long way towards justifying continued increases to water and sewer bills.

“People are paying very close attention to these rates and not hearing details of what work is planned and where it’s going to be,” Vaughan said when council, at its December 7 meeting, approved combined water and sewer rate increases of 7.3 percent, from $1,416 to $1,519 in 2024.

“I think we all have that opportunity to tell that story in support of rate increases over the next few years.”

Dave McCarthy, the town’s director of operations, will present an update on water and sewer projects when council meets again this Wednesday…
