Town issues boil water advisory

The Renfrew County and District Health Unit has issued a boil water advisory for the town of Deep River.

The town put out a notice Thursday morning advising the public that all users of the town’s water system should boil their drinking water “until further notice.”

The town said a “loss of pressure in the distribution system” for roughly 30 minutes late Wednesday evening, September 28, was reported “consistent with Ontario’s Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002.”

The town said it is currently “rehabilitating a portion of the distribution system which is a critical upgrade to ensure the integrity of the system for years to come.”

“This project combined with issues with Hydro phase reliability has caused a loss of pressure in our municipal water distribution system.”

The town’s notice says Ontario has strict water quality standards, “which the Town of Deep River continually meets and exceeds.”

“There are a series of filtration, treatment, monitoring and backup systems in place to continually supply high quality drinking water to every home and business within Deep River.

“Although rare, an adverse test result or potential problem in the water treatment and distribution system may result in us asking customers to boil water before consuming it.”

During the boil water advisory, residents should bring water to a “rolling boil” for at least a minute and allow to cool before use.

Tap water is still considered safe for washing clothes, showering and bathing (“provided care is taken not to swallow water”), shaving and flushing toilets.

Residents should use the boiled water for drinking, brushing teeth, washing hands, washing and preparing food, making ice or coffee, or giving water to pets.
