Deep River council has its ducks in a row for the collection of recyclable materials from so-called “non-eligible sources” for the coming year.
At its last regular meeting of 2024, council signed off an agreement for a one-year extension of its current contract with P&G Enterprises to provide for recycling pick-up from “non-eligible sources” such as commercial and institutional addresses.
Blue box collection has been a hot-button topic for municipalities since the province announced in 2022 that producers of recyclable products would become “fully responsible” for the management of the blue box program in Ontario.
The blue box legislation allows for organizations called Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) to represent the makers of paper products and packaging, etc, and most of the big companies have opted to be represented by a PRO called Circular Materials (CM).
Municipalities are making the transition to the new blue box collection system at the beginning of this year, with the full switch to the producer-pay model happening in 2026.
One sticking point in the new program is that while CM will take over blue box collection for residential properties, it will not be responsible for “non-eligible sources” such as commercial and industrial properties, commercial farms, municipal buildings, churches and daycare centres…
