Town celebrates firefighters’ commitment, dedication

It has been seven years since Deep River began the transition to a composite fire service, and Friday night a dinner was held to show appreciation to all those who make it work.

About 50 people – firefighters and guests, along with members of council and town staff – enjoyed dinner at The Turn restaurant at the Deep River Golf Club.

Fire Chief Gary McRae recalled how he and then Deputy Chief Doug Tennant began running a campaign to attract volunteer firefighters in September 2018.

“We had a lot of concern thinking, wow, some of the fire services are having a hard time getting volunteers, but yet, here in Deep River, the residents rose to the challenge,” he said.

McRae said he wanted to acknowledge “the full spectrum of dedication our firefighters have demonstrated, not just in their emergency response, but also in how they proactively serve our entire community.”

“I know what it takes. I mean, I’ve seen it, I’ve been experiencing it for 30 years now, 40 years, the late night calls, the missed dinners. It actually requires immense personal sacrifice,” he said.

“Your courage and operational excellence are the foundation of the trust our residents, our citizens, place in us every day”…
