A home in Rapides des Joachims was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning.
Laurentian Hills firefighters responded to a call that was originally dispatched as an “explosion in a home” on Rue de L’Eglise in Rapides des Joachims at 3:35 am Sunday.
In a statement, the Laurentian Hills Fire Department said that when crews arrived, “the home was fully engulfed with multiple adjacent exposures.”
“Six fire apparatus and 17 firefighters performed a defensive attack to bring the fire under control. The structure was deemed a total loss and 1 pet perished in the fire.”
The fire department said that while investigating the cause of the fire, “it was found that no working smoke alarms were present inside the home.”
“The Laurentian Hills Fire Department wants to remind you that smoke alarms are required by law on every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas.”
The fire destroyed the home and possessions of Jordan Charbonneau, a single father of three.
The children were not at the home at the time of the fire but Douglas Charbonneau, Jordan’s uncle, said he was lucky to escape in just his jeans and sock feet.
Douglas Charbonneau has now created a “Go Fund Me” account called “Help Jordan Rebuild” with a goal of $20,000 to help Jordan get back on his feet.
Douglas says the funds will be used to replace the items lost in the fire including clothes, and personal items including pickup truck and kids bedroom furniture.
