Roundabouts, “2+1” lanes for Highway 17?

Renfrew County will ask the province of Ontario to look at “alternative solutions” to the future expansion of Highway 17 from Renfrew to Deep River, including roundabouts and a “2+1” highway design.

The request is included in a package of proposals the county will present to provincial ministers and officials at the annual conference of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) later this summer.

In its pitch, the county says the province’s commitment to continuing the expansion of Highway 17 to four lanes as far as Bruce Street, three kilometres west of Renfrew, “will further assist us with attracting residents and businesses to our region.”

But the county says work must continue on expanding the highway as far as Deep River.

“A coordinated strategy for the ongoing expansion of Highway 17 involves a series of innovative approaches, (including):

• Removal of traffic signals, combined with integration of highway roundabouts and interchanges, designed to accommodate future expansion.

• Implementation of a 2+1 highway lane design”…
