Pembroke man charged in “suspicious death”

The Upper Ottawa Valley detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) says they have made an arrest in connection with a “suspicious death” in Pembroke Friday.

Police say that on May 27, 2022, sometime in the afternoon, an incident occurred in a downtown apartment in Pembroke. Police were called later in the evening and located a deceased male.

An investigation was commenced by the OPP Upper Ottawa Valley Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Services, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

A post mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld at this time. 

John Dagenais, 31 years old from Pembroke, has been charged under section 129 of the Criminal Code with Obstructing Police. The accused was scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on Saturday.

Police say there are no concerns for public safety, but residents of downtown Pembroke should expect to see increased police activity in the area.

The OPP investigation, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario, is continuing.
