The acting commander of the local Ontario Provincial Police detachment says Laurentian Hills will see more presence by the police in the coming year.
Acting Inspector Sgt Sarah Darraugh told Laurentian Hills council last week that the Upper Ottawa Valley detachment is launching several new initiatives, both in response to local concerns and provincial direction.
For example, Darraugh said, the detachment now has a dedicated traffic management officer who will be deployed to communities to deal specifically with traffic issues.
Darraugh said the officer will not be pulled off of traffic duty to deal with other issues unless it’s a “priority call,” but will instead be focused on concerns like speeding and vehicles running stop signs.
“Now, as you can appreciate, I (only) have one officer for all of the communities (in the detachment area), but they will be directed to be in specific communities on certain days, and you will see them for that period of time,” she said.
The detachment has also received guaranteed funding through 2029 for RIDE programs.
Darraugh said that while RIDE programs are typically held during the Christmas season and around other holidays, they can also be set up around community events.
“So if there are events that you have concerns of and would like our presence, that would be great just to get a message and we could (be there),” she said…
