The Mackenzie Mustangs won a thrilling victory against the top seed from Marie-Riviere at the Eastern Ontario (EOSSAA) championship held in Cornwall last week.
It capped off a perfect season by the senior team that posted a 10-0 record in the regular season, won all four matches in the local playoffs and went undefeated at the Eastern Ontario finals.
In preliminary play at EOSSAA, Mackenzie won both matches 2 sets to 1, having fought off Le Sommet from Hawkesbury and host l’Héritage from Cornwall.
While the matches were both close and could have gone either way, the Mustangs’ overall team discipline and execution prevailed giving them top spot in their pool.
Team play improved throughout the day, and Mackenzie made quick work of their semifinal opponents St. Mary from Brockville in two straight sets.
In the final match, it was obvious that the Mustangs were the stronger team, and they handed the Marie-Riviere Dragons an early ticket home.
Mackenzie will represent EOSSAA later this week at the provincial high school vollleyball championships in Sudbury, realizing a long-held dream that most of the players have had since the last Mustang appearance at OFSAA in 2017.
