Library elevator out of service a year

It’s official – the elevator at the Deep River Library has now been out of commission for a year.

The town budgeted $117,000 last February to get it fixed, with the work requiring upgrades to some of its critical components, primarily the elevator’s control system.

At the time that money was set aside for its repair, town council was told by staff the elevator wouldn’t be up and running for two months, owing to the challenge in getting parts for the 30 year-old machine.

This time around, however, town staff aren’t laying the blame on supply chain and procurement issues, but rather the company doing the work on the elevator.

Sean Patterson, the town’s chief administrative officer, told council last week he and McCarthy are putting pressure on that company to finish what it started.

“We’ve collectively merged our communications regarding communicating the community’s frustration, and council’s frustration, and we’ve talked about non-performance discussions regarding our agreement with them, and our agreement to get this project done,” Patterson said.

“With any luck, we’re going to get this thing done”…
