Laurentian Hills to build new town hall?

It’s still in the idea stage more than a plan, but Laurentian Hills is moving slowly towards building new municipal offices in Point Alexander.

Both the town offices and the public works garage located off Highway 17 have served beyond their useful life and need to be replaced.

CAO Sherry Batten told council last week that, including maintenance, repairs and utilities, the town has spent more than $500,000 on the two buildings over the past five years.

Council spent time last week discussing some of the features of a new building, including a dedicated entrance for the library, a locker room with showers for public works, and a reception area with public washrooms.

Mayor Anne Giardini noted that she recently visited the new municipal building in Laurentian Valley and was impressed with the facility, which opened in 2016.

Among the issues still to be decided is what size to make the new council chambers.

Batten asked if council wanted a larger space to allow for more people to attend public meetings, for example.

But Giardini said that rarely happens.

“In the twenty-plus years I’ve been here (on council), very very seldom have we needed the extra space,” she said…
