Incumbents get early jump on municipal elections

Nominations for the municipal elections in Ontario next fall opened last week and a handful of candidates in the three municipalities of North Renfrew were quick to put their names on the ballot.

The nomination period for candidates to file their nomination papers began last Monday, May 2, and runs through to Friday, August 19.

Voters will head to the polls on Monday, October 24.

Five candidates had filed their nomination papers as of Friday.

In Head, Clara and Maria, incumbent Mayor Debbie Grills made it official that she will be seeking re-election as head of council, while incumbent Deputy Mayor Ernie Villeneuve filed his nomination papers for the position of councillor.

Both those candidates were extremely quick off the mark, in and quick succession, in filing their nomination papers.

Head, Clara and Maria’s website shows that Grill filed her paperwork at 9 am on May 2 and Villeneuve must have been standing right in line behind her as he filed at 9:07 am.

In Laurentian Hills, meanwhile, incumbent Councillor Brenda Blimkie, who represents the constituents of Ward 3 in that municipality, was also quick out of the gate, filing her nomination papers as well on May 2.

Further down the river in Deep River, two candidates also filed their nomination papers last week. 

Both incumbent Councillor Will Fitton and incumbent Reeve Glenn Doncaster filed their paperwork on Wednesday, with both seeking re-election to those respective positions…
