Houseboats destroyed in fire

Deep River firefighters responded within minutes Monday afternoon to calls of a houseboat fire at the back of the property at 33382 Highway 17 in Deep River.

Two houseboats stored on the property were fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived just after 2:30 pm.

Firefighters were able to knock down the blaze before it spread to other boats and trailers also stored on the lot, or to the backyards of neighbouring properties on Frontenac.

There was no word on the cause of the fire as of the NRT presstime. Losses are estimated at more than $100,000.

Meanwhile, Deep River Police have laid charges in a previous houseboat fire at the Deep River Marina.

In a statement released Tuesday, police say that on April 14, shortly after 2 pm, Deep River firefighters responded to a 911 call reporting a fire at the marina.

Crews located the fire and quickly brought it under control. Following a preliminary examination of the scene, the fire was deemed suspicious.

The Fire Chief requested assistance from a fire investigator with the Deep River Police Service to determine the origin and cause of the blaze.

“Through a joint investigation, authorities determined that the fire had been intentionally set.”

After several days of continued investigation, police have made an arrest. A youth, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with one count of arson.

The accused has been released into the custody of a parent with conditions.

Damage resulting from the fire is estimated between $8,000 and $10,000. The investigation remains ongoing.
