The Renfrew County and District Health Unit has named a new acting medical officer of health (MOH) as of January 1, 2023.
The board of health announced Thursday that Dr. Robert Cushman, who led the health unit through the COVID-19 pandemic, will not renew his contract after December 31.
In his place, the board announced that Dr. Ian Gemmill will serve as acting MOH for the period January 1 to April 30, 2023, while the health unit continues its search for a permanent replacement.
The health unit said Dr. Gemmill is a public health official who has worked in Kingston, Ottawa and other areas of the province for over 40 years.
“We look forward to welcoming him to the RCDHU team,” said Ann Aikens, chair of the board of health.
Meanwhile, Aikens said the board and all health unit staff extend their “gratitude and heartfelt appreciation” to Dr. Cushman for his service to staff and residents of Renfrew County and District (RCD) over the past five years.
“His exemplary public health leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic provided guidance, support and reassurance to our partners and the residents of RCD during very uncertain times.”
“We look forward to working with Dr. Gemmill as we transition into post-pandemic recovery. We are grateful that he has agreed to join our team and share his passion and expertise as we continue to work with our partners to respond to local public health needs,” Aikens added.
