Mother Nature smiled down on organizers and participants of Deep River’s 41st annual Triathlon.
The sun wasn’t smiling, but the torrential rainstorms weather forecasters had been calling for never materialized, allowing the event to kick off at 8:30 am Sunday under calm, cloudy skies at the marina.
As in past years, the triathlon course consisted of a 750-metre swim, 27 km cycle and an 8 km run, with the shorter sprint course consisting of the same 750-metre swim, followed by an 18 km cycle and a 5 km run.
Emma McDonald, the town’s acting recreation and culture manager, said there were about 150 participants in this year’s triathlon.
“It was supposed to rain all day, so we’re very happy,” she said while awaiting participants at the Centennial Terrace finish line.
“I’m happy with the weather, happy with the turnout. Having a great time!”
When all was said and done at the finish line, Max Guerout finished the full course with a winning time of 1:28:15.
Born and raised in Deep River, Guerout also won the triathlon in both 2023 and 2024.
“The rain held off,” he remarked after crossing the finish line.
“It was nice to see everybody out on the streets, cheering us on.”
A few drops of rain did fall during the triathlon, but Guerout said rain only affects the cycling portion of such events.
“For the bikes, it’s not ideal,” he said.
“You have to take fewer risks.”
It was excellent weather for the swimming portion, however.
“Flat water is all you can ask for,” he said.
This year’s event saw a total of 73 individual competitors finish the full and sprint races, along with 26 teams of two or three.
