Gallant wins ninth term as MP

Liberal candidate Cyndi Mills ran the strongest election campaign for her party since the days of Len Hopkins, but it still wasn’t enough to crack the solid foundation of support long-time Conservative MP Cheryl Gallant has built in Renfrew County.

Gallant won her ninth consecutive election victory Monday, earning more than 55 per cent of the vote.

With 261 of 262 polls counted, Elections Canada said Gallant had been chosen on 36,455 of the ballots cast in the riding of Algonquin-Renfrew-Pembroke.

Mills was the first choice on 24,839 ballots, or almost 38 per cent of local voters, while Eileen Jones-White of the NDP trailed far behind at 2,430 (3.7 per cent).

Four other candidates failed to register more than 1,000 votes across the riding.

Randy Briand of the United Party of Canada had 897 ballots cast his way, Danilo Velasquez of the Green Party had 599, and independent candidates Seth Malina and Stefan Klietsch received 223 and 121 votes respectively.

Turnout across the riding was strong, with more than 70 per cent of eligible voters (65,564) taking part.
