The secret is out.
The town of Deep River has been named number one on a list of top 10 best places to live in Canada.
“Moving Waldo” – a website and mobile app that helps people organize and book their move to a new home – says Deep River is number one for “best quality of life.”
“Located in Renfrew County, along the Ottawa River… the Deep River area provides stunning scenery and excellent boating on the broad river, as well as exciting hiking trails in the hills across the Ottawa River,” the site says.
“The city is home to the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, so you might consider living in Deep River if you work in this field.”
Moving Waldo says Deep River offers “one of the most affordable housing markets in Ontario.”
“Buying a house will cost you an average of $400,000 and renting a 1-bedroom apartment will cost you around $1,400.
“In addition to being one of the cheapest places to live in Ontario, Deep River is also very safe. Its Crime Severity Index stands at 21.68, which is much lower than the national Index of 73.44.”
Deep River Mayor Sue D’Eon shared the news on social media Tuesday morning, says “movingwaldo.com is apparently a very wise App.”
Deep River was recognized last year as one of the most affordable “cities” in Ontario to buy a new home.
Zolo, an independent real estate marketplace, determined the province’s “most affordable cities” using a variety of factors, including average income, unemployment rate, and population growth.
Deep River topped the list of affordable small cities (communities with a population under 30,000), with an average household income of $100,343 and an average home price of $217,000.
Deep River was followed in the list of small cities by Rainy River, Smooth Rock Falls, Englehart, Marathon, Clinton, Blind River, Timmins, Pembroke, and Valley East.
For the best places to live ranking, Moving Waldo says it based its rankings on three criteria: “safety, affordability and access to recreational facilities and parks.”
“Health, pollution, green spaces and recreation, climate, education and employment are the criteria involved to determine the quality of life.”
The rest of the top 10 list includes Levis, Quebec (“best for families”), Trenton, Nova Scotia (“best for young workers”), Wellington County, Ontario (also labelled “best quality of life”), Quebec City (“best for housing market affordability among urban areas”), Saguenay, Quebec (“best for first-time home buyers”), Barrie, Ontario (“best for families and art lovers”), Thetford Mines, Quebec (“best for the outdoorsy”), Edmundston, New Brunswick (“best for job opportunities: nurses, physicians & civil engineers”), and High River, Alberta (“best for tranquility and the outdoorsy”).
