Critics of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ plan to build a low-level radioactive waste site at Chalk River say a report supporting the move is “seriously flawed” and they vow to fight the recommendation at licensing hearings before the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).
Staff at the CNSC recently released a 590-page report on the proposed Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) before the first hearing held Tuesday.
In the report, CNSC staff say the NSDF is “not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects,” and that the commission should approve a licence for the site’s construction.
But Ole Hendrickson, who is billed as a “scientist and researcher” for the Concerned Citizens of Renfrew County and Area, said in a statement earlier this month that the CNSC “has failed to assess the project in an objective and scientifically credible manner.”
Hendrickson said the staff report includes a number of “critical omissions” that he says “make it impossible for the commission to make a sound decision about whether or not to licence the dump”….
