Renfrew County’s Algonquin Trail has been accepted into the Trans Canada Trail network.
What that means for the trail’s future is still unclear, but county officials note that it could open the door to grants and funding to support the trail’s westward expansion.
In a report to the county’s operations committee, manager of capital works Taylor Hanrath says the Trans Canada Trail (TCT) organization has accepted the Algonquin Trail under two “statuses.”
The section of trail from Arnprior to “Wylie Road in Deep River” will be designated “registered ready… open and available to all users.”
The rest of the trail, from “Deep River to the county’s northern border near Deux Rivieres,” will be considered “candidate ready” – “the trail is approved as part of the TCT, but is still under development and not open.”
Hanrath noted that the county “and its partners along the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail, have been working on this designation since 2017.”
“The acceptance of the Algonquin Trail into the TCT network provides a large number of funding opportunities as well as greater overall promotion for the county’s recreational trail,” he said.
“We are extremely pleased and thankful for this consideration and look forward to working with trail user groups, and our economic development team, to promote this opportunity well into the future”…
