County to take on Banting Drive

Banting Drive in Deep River will be taken under the wing of the County of Renfrew.

County council passed a bylaw last week agreeing to the town’s request to have the stretch of Banting Drive, from Highway 17 to Hillcrest Avenue, added to the county road network.

The county’s acceptance is conditional on Deep River rehabilitating the road and bringing it up to county specs.

The town already agreed to do that earlier this year when it made its request to the county.

Deep River has budgeted $400,000 in this year’s capital budget for the repaving of Banting Drive from Highway 17 to the hospital, with the town hoping to secure $140,000 in grant funding for that project.

The town passed a resolution in June stating that Banting Drive exceeds the minimum criteria for inclusion into the county road network, and asking the county to conduct a review of the roadway using the criteria laid down in the county’s roads rationalization study.

The town originally requested the county to take over Banting Drive from the highway to the intersection of McElligott Drive and Balmer’s Bay Road.

But further discussions with the county resulted in the scope being expanded further down to Hillcrest Avenue, thereby taking in both the new long-term care centre under construction as well as the county’s paramedic base station…
