Anyone who wants to paint a Pride flag or other “decorative” crosswalk on a county road will have to be willing to pay the full cost of installation and maintenance, which the county estimates could come with a price tag of $5,000 to $15,000 “depending on the length of the crossing.”
That’s according a new draft policy on “decorative crosswalks” presented to the county’s operations committee last week.
County staff drew up the draft policy in response to a request in August to repaint a crosswalk on Petawawa Boulevard to “recognize the LGBTQIA2S+ community for the 2023 season.”
“It is anticipated similar requests for different causes may be received in the future (ie. Black Lives Matter, Every Child Matters, and Ukraine support),” county staff said in a report to the committee at the time.
In Deep River, both Ridge Road and Deep River Road (from the highway to the post office) are county roads and any crosswalks would have to comply with county policy…
