County to get money for “traffic calming”

Renfrew County will be eligible for up to $450,000 in funding to help “calm traffic” after Premier Doug Ford cancelled the province’s speed camera program.

The funding, provided through the “Road Safety Initiatives Fund” (RSIF), is intended to “support municipalities in transitioning from Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) to alternative road safety measures,” according to a report presented recently to the county’s operations committee.

The county was in the process last year of installing speed cameras at three locations – at Pine View Public School in Petawawa, St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School in Renfrew, and Rockwood Public School on Round Lake Road outside Pembroke.

The county’s funding includes $90,000 of “immediate interim funding” (already received) and up to $360,000 through application to the RSIF.

In a letter to the county, Felix Fung, assistant deputy minister in the Ministry of Transportation, says the program is intended to help municipalities in “maintaining and enhancing road safety… through proactive, locally tailored measures that help reduce speeding, prevent collisions, and create safer environments for all road users”…
