Go west, young man – but only as far as Bissett Creek.
The mayors and reeves of Renfrew County made it official last week, deciding to postpone the westward expansion of the Algonquin Trail due to unforeseen cost issues.
As previously reported, the county’s operations committee received a report last month which stated it will cost millions of dollars to expand the trail past Bissett Creek, owing in part to the poor condition of a railway bridge there which crosses over Highway 17.
The county acquired the former CP railway corridor in 2016, with the aim of creating a recreational trail stretching from Smiths Falls in the east to Papineau-Cameron township in the west.
The cost of completing the entire Algonquin Trail had at one time been estimated at more than $4 million.
But the county’s 2024 capital budget allocation for development of the trail is $3.8 million alone…
