Does Deep River need a second stoplight on Highway 17 at Ridge Road?
Councillor Kathy Hughes will ask her council colleagues this week to support a motion asking the Ministry of Transportation to assess the need for a second light, “taking into consideration the safety of active transportation users needing to cross the highway” to access businesses and services on the south side of the highway.
Hughes raised the issue at the last council meeting, warning that many people are doing the “dash and dine” across four lanes of traffic to reach the local Tim Hortons, for just one example.
Hughes said the situation is likely to get even worse with the new development on the lot between Tim Hortons and Canadian Tire, including the opening of a McDonald’s restaurant.
In a memorandum attached to her proposed motion, Hughes says she often walks or bikes to “various establishments” on the highway, usually to meet friends for coffee.
Living in the east end, she normally uses the pedestrian lights at the Deep River Road intersection to cross safely.
“A few times lately, however, I have come from the other direction via Ridge Road after a bike trip and have experienced first-hand the challenge of making the dash across the four lanes when there is a gap in traffic to get to those same establishments”…
