Deep River Councillor Will Fitton is taking the town’s case for financial assistance from its neighbours one step further.

As reported in last week’s NRT, Deep River’s draft 2024 capital budget is calling for $1.4 million to rehabilitate the town’s community pool.

The budget report on the community pool also recommended that a formal request be made to the neighbouring municipalities of Laurentian Hills and Head, Clara and Maria (HCM), asking them to provide contributions proportional to their residents’ use of the pool over the last two years.

But Fitton, in a notice of motion on the agenda of this week’s council meeting, is calling for Laurentian Hills and HCM to provide financial contributions for other recreational facilities owned and operated by Deep River under terms of a shared recreational facilities agreement.

“I would like to propose that staff prepare a comprehensive report outlining the operating cost and capital costs, including immediate expected or planned expected costs of our recreation facilities, most importantly the pool, arena and marina,” Fitton states in the preamble to his motion.

“And to have staff, with council, draft a letter to Laurentian Hills and Head, Clara and Maria with that information, and to negotiate a fair and equitable recreational facilities shared cost agreement”…
