Council trims tax hike to 5.4 per cent

Deep River council made it official last week, signing off the on the town’s 2024 municipal budget.

This, the third revised version of the capital and operating budget, contains changes which will see a reduction in the originally proposed tax rate.

The original draft budget called for an increase of 6.5 percent in the average residential property tax bill, made up of a combined 7.9 percent increase in the municipal portion of the tax bill and a 5.3 percent increase in the county portion, with no increase in the education rate.

That would have meant a $215 increase in the tax bill of a median single-family home in Deep River with an assessed value of $204,000, from $3,300 to $3,515.

The approved budget pares the average residential tax increase down to 5.4 percent.

Overall, that now means a $178 increase in the tax bill of a home valued at $204,000, with the municipal portion accounting for $135 of that increase…
